Cellular Shades in Austin, TX

Cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, are built from pockets of fabric that trap air. That layer of air insulates the window, helping keep summer heat out and winter cold in.

They're light, quiet, and available in top-down/bottom-up versions, so you can let light in from the top while keeping privacy below.

How cellular shades work

Cellular shades are made of two or more layers of pleated fabric bonded into honeycomb-shaped pockets. Those pockets trap air, and that air layer slows heat moving through the window.

Single cell shades insulate well; double cell shades add a second row of pockets for more insulation and sound softening. Top-down/bottom-up versions let you lower the top of the shade for light while keeping the bottom closed for privacy.

Why we recommend them in Central Texas

Older Austin homes and many new builds have windows that let a lot of summer heat through. Cellular shades are one of the most energy efficient interior window treatments, and they're light, quiet, and compact when raised.

Top-down/bottom-up is especially useful for bathrooms, street-facing bedrooms, and homes close to neighbors, which describes a lot of newer subdivisions in Round Rock, Hutto, and Kyle.

Benefits

What you get with custom cellular shades from ATX Blinds & Draperies.

Insulation

Honeycomb pockets help keep summer heat out and winter warmth in.

Top-down/bottom-up

Light from the top, privacy at the bottom.

Light filtering or blackout

Choose by room.

Compact stack

Folds up very small, leaving more glass open.

Best for

  • Energy efficiency
  • Bedrooms and nurseries
  • Street-facing windows
  • Top-down/bottom-up privacy

Options

  • Single or double cell
  • Light filtering or blackout
  • Top-down/bottom-up
  • Cordless or motorized
  • Smart hub for phone app and voice control, at home or away

Good to know

  • Cellular shades have a softer, more traditional look than roller shades. For a very modern room, a roller or zebra shade may fit better.
  • Dust can settle into cells over time; a quick pass with a hair dryer on cool or a vacuum brush clears it.

What affects the price

  • Size of each window (wider and taller costs more)
  • Fabric or material you choose
  • Lift system: chain, cordless, or motorized
  • Mounting hardware, cassettes, or tracks
  • Number of windows (larger orders often price better per window)
  • Specialty shapes and hard-to-reach installs

Our process

Consultations are available seven days a week.

  1. Free consultation

We come to you with samples and look at every window, how it faces, and how the room is used.

  2. Measure & quote

We measure every window precisely and send a written quote within 24 hours.

  3. Professional install

We install, test, and clean up. Products are covered by manufacturer warranties.

Care & maintenance

A few minutes now and then keeps them looking new.

Dusting

Dust every few weeks with a microfiber cloth, a feather duster, or the soft brush on your vacuum set to low suction. Regular dusting keeps buildup from settling into the weave.

Spot cleaning

Blot small marks with a soft cloth dampened with water and a little mild soap. Blot, don't rub, and let the fabric dry fully before you raise the shade.

Everyday use

Raise and lower the shade with the chain, bottom bar, or motor, never by pulling on the fabric. If it starts rolling unevenly, call us and we'll adjust it.

Cellular shades: common questions

Have another question? Call (512) 751-8408.

Do cellular shades really save energy?

The trapped air adds insulation at the window, which helps reduce heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter.

Are cellular shades the same as honeycomb shades?

Yes. Cellular and honeycomb are two names for the same shade.

Single cell or double cell?

Single cell suits most windows. Double cell adds more insulation for hot, sun-facing windows and bedrooms.

Do cellular shades come in blackout?

Yes. Blackout cellular shades are popular for bedrooms and nurseries.

What is top-down/bottom-up?

A shade that opens from the top and the bottom, so you can let light in above eye level and keep privacy below.

Can I control motorized shades from my phone?

Yes. Add a smart hub and you can raise, lower, group, and schedule everything from an app on your phone, at home or away, and connect to popular voice assistants.
