Window treatments for sliding glass doors
Sliding glass doors are some of the hardest openings to cover. They're wide, you walk through them every day, the handle sticks out, and in Texas they often face the afternoon sun.
Here are the options that actually work on sliding doors, and how to choose. We'll bring samples of each to your home and show you how they'd sit on your door.

Your options
Every one of these is measured and installed by us.
Ripplefold draperies
Glide open in one smooth motion and stack tightly to the side, leaving the door clear. Modern and soft.
Smart motorized drapes
Open the whole door with one button, an app, your voice, or a schedule. Best for wide doors and heavy lined panels.
Shutters with sliding panels
Norman bypass shutters slide on a track, so they never swing into the walkway. Built-in and architectural.
Solar roller shades
Cut afternoon heat and glare while keeping your view of the yard. Clean and affordable.
Dual day & night shades
Solar for daytime, blackout for night, in one compact system above the door.
Zebra shades
Shift the bands for light or privacy without raising the shade.
Smart drapes
Soft fabric vanes in sheer that turn like a vertical blind, and you can walk right through them. Wand or motorized.
How to choose
Start with how often you use the door. If it's the main way to the backyard, choose something that opens fully and stacks to the side, like ripplefold draperies or sliding shutter panels. If you mostly look through it, a solar shade is clean and affordable.
Then think about the sun. West- and south-facing doors need real heat control: a 3% solar shade, a dual shade, or a solar shade layered with draperies. Read more in the best treatments for west-facing windows.
Finally, consider reach and weight. Wide doors with heavy lined panels are where smart motorized drapes shine, and with a smart hub you can control them from your phone.
What we get right on sliding doors
- Mounting high and wide so the door looks taller and the glass stays clear
- Clearing the door handle with the right projection
- Stacking draperies on the side that doesn't slide
- Splitting very wide doors into two shades when it makes sense
- Choosing fabric for the direction the door faces
- Keeping cords and chains out of the walkway for kids and pets

What's the best window treatment for a sliding glass door?
It depends on how you use the door. Ripplefold draperies and shutters with sliding panels keep the door clear and easy to walk through. Roller and solar shades are clean and affordable. Motorized drapes are easiest for wide or heavy doors.
Will a shade get in the way of the door handle?
It can if it's mounted inside the frame. We mount sliding door shades high and outside the frame, with enough projection to clear the handle.
Can I use one shade across a whole sliding door?
Often, yes. Very wide openings may work better as two shades, so you can open the side you walk through without raising the whole thing.
Can shutters go on a sliding door?
Yes. Norman shutters for sliding doors use bypass panels that slide on a track instead of swinging open.
Can drapes on a sliding door be motorized?
Yes. Smart motorized drapes open and close with a remote, wall switch, phone app through a smart hub, voice, or schedule.
What works best on a west-facing sliding door?
A 3% solar shade cuts heat and glare while keeping the view, and pairing it with draperies adds privacy at night.
