3% vs. 5% Solar Shades: Which Openness Is Right for Texas Sun?
By Patricio Marquez · October 6, 2026
Solar shades are the most requested window treatment in Central Texas, and the first question everyone asks is which openness to choose. The short answer: 3% for hard afternoon sun, 5% where the view matters most. Here's how to decide window by window.
What openness means
Solar fabric is a woven screen. The openness factor is the share of the weave that's open. A 3% shade is 97% fabric; a 5% shade is 95% fabric. Lower openness blocks more heat, glare, and UV. Higher openness lets in more light and keeps a clearer view.
3% solar shades
- Blocks about 97% of UV.
- Best glare control for TVs and computer screens.
- Slightly more daytime privacy.
- Our usual pick for west- and south-facing windows.
5% solar shades
- Blocks about 95% of UV.
- Brighter rooms and a sharper view.
- Great for east- and north-facing windows and shaded glass.
- Popular for lake and Hill Country views.
Color matters as much as percentage
Dark solar fabrics absorb glare and are easier to see through, so a dark 5% can feel clearer than a light 3%. Light fabrics reflect more heat and blend with light walls but look hazier from inside. We bring both to your home so you can compare at your own windows, at the time of day the sun is worst.
Mixing openness in one home
Many homes use 3% on the west side and 5% everywhere else, in the same color, so the house looks consistent from the street while the hottest windows get more protection.
What solar shades won't do
Neither 3% nor 5% gives night privacy with lights on inside. For bedrooms and street-facing rooms, pair solar shades with draperies or choose a dual day and night shade.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3% or 5% better for Austin?
For west- and south-facing windows with full afternoon sun, 3% usually wins. For east, north, or shaded windows, or where the view comes first, choose 5%.
Is 1% solar shade better?
A 1% shade blocks even more but noticeably dims the view. It can make sense for extreme glare, but most homes are happiest at 3% or 5%.
Can I see through solar shades at night?
Not well, and others can see in when lights are on inside.
