Zebra Shades vs. Roller Shades: Which Is Right for Your Room?
By Patricio Marquez · October 6, 2026
Zebra shades and roller shades both roll up into a clean line at the top of the window, but they control light in very different ways.
How zebra shades work
Zebra shades, also known as banded or Sheer Elegance shades, have two layers of alternating sheer and solid bands. Line up the sheers for light and view; offset them for privacy, all without raising the shade.
How roller shades work
Roller shades are a single layer of fabric. The fabric you choose decides the result: solar for view and glare control, light filtering for soft light, or blackout for darkness.
Side by side
- Adjustable light without raising: zebra.
- Clear view outside: solar roller shade.
- Full darkness: blackout roller shade.
- Heat and glare on west windows: 3% solar roller shade.
- Soft, layered look: zebra.
- Simplest, cleanest line: roller.
Our take
Zebra shades are great in living rooms and bedrooms where you want daylight and privacy in the same window. Roller shades win when you need a specific job done well: maximum darkness, maximum view, or maximum heat control.
Frequently asked questions
Are zebra shades blackout?
No. Room darkening bands get close, but for true blackout use a blackout roller shade or add draperies.
Are zebra shades the same as Sheer Elegance?
Yes. Sheer Elegance is a well-known name for this style.
